The EP has decided to refer the EU–Mercosur Agreement to the EU Court of Justice

21 January 2026 - 13h30 - “spiritsEUROPE takes note of the European Parliament’s decision to refer the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement to the European Court of Justice. While we respect the institutional process, this step is likely to result in further delays to an agreement that has been more than 25 years in the making and is needed now more than ever in the current economic and geopolitical context. At a time when Europe’s competitiveness, resilience and strategic positioning are under growing pressure, prolonged uncertainty risks weakening the EU’s ability to diversify trade relations, strengthen supply chains and provide greater resilience and market opportunities for exporters, including spirits producers. Given the strategic importance of the EU-Mercosur Agreement, we encourage EU institutions to preserve momentum and work towards its implementation as swiftly as technically feasible, in full respect of today’s decision.”
