I am extremely honoured to lead the committee, which brings together inspiring people with deep expertise and knowledge of the sector and trade. As Chair, I focus on creating a conducive environment that allows members to speak up, generate ideas, think outside the box and co-create strategies and actions that would drive the international success of our industry.
The most pressing concern is that the trade challenges we are currently facing have nothing to do with our sector. The China anti-dumping investigation [on EU wine-based and marc-based spirits] is the latest example. Decoupling our sector from unrelated disputes is a key priority for us. In terms of recent opportunities, I am very pleased with the creation of the broad business coalition in support of an open trade policy. This is an opportunity for us to work with like-minded sectors to ensure that the interests of export-oriented sectors are well represented in the future EU trade strategy.
First, don't give up on building a positive agenda with your trading partners. It contributes to resilience and diversification.
Second, protect internationally successful sectors like ours from trade retaliation that has nothing to do with us.
Third, improve public-private dialogue to help us manage geo-economic risks.
Personally, I'd opt for a Fig and Whiskey Smash, enhanced with a drop of maple syrup, a hint of lemon and a sprig of rosemary. It's the perfect blend of comfort and sophistication for the autumn season, while still evoking the warmth of summer.
