New Protected Geographical Indications for spirits

The Commission has recently published two regulations expanding the family of European protection Geographical Indications (GIs), including through the recognition of third countries’ GIs.  Europe is the home of many famous and less famous spirits; but one thing they all have in common is a strong link to the land, the climate and the people all of which contribute to making them unique.  All these products are the result of the “terroir”: they are rooted in the know-how and experience of the men and women working daily to develop enjoyable spirits drinks.

We are happy to announce that the 300+ GIs family is growing with the addition of “Polish Vodka” and “Lithuanian Vodka” in the flavoured vodka category and the “Újfehértói meggypálinka” in the fruit spirit category.  “Újfehértói meggypálinka” is produced exclusively from the sour cherry varieties belongs to the famous Palinka traditionally produced in Hungary.

European GIs are the business card of our sector outside Europe, generating European jobs, sales and growth that will stay local.

Last but not least, a foreign GI - “Rum de Guatemala” - has been included in the EU register which will offer to Guatemalan producers the same protection as to those producing “Rhum de Martinique”, “Rón de Málaga” or “Rum da Madeira”.
