Interview with Bosco Torremocha, Director General of Espirituosos España

1. How did you get into the spirits sector?

Long story short. I have been involved in the sector for long, first as a consumer, then as a bar & cocktail owner, then selling wines and spirits as export manager and recently (only over the last 25 years) involved in the association role. First in Fedejerez and over the last 14 years in Espirituosos España.

2. What is unique about spirits?

Spirits are about tradition & innovation, but – above all – our story is about the soul and essence of agricultural raw materials and about an excitingly dynamic sector that deserves more attention and a better understanding through knowledge and learning in a more profound and self-seeking way. There is still so much more to learn and discover about us!

3. What is your role as Director General of Espirituosos España.

In one simple phrase: putting the sector together to address challenges and opportunities in the most accurate proceeding.

4. What are key policy challenges & opportunities for the sector in Spain at the moment?

Spain is noteworthy in terms of its high overall share of moderate consumption (97% among occasions) life expectancy (among the highest in the world in 2024) and a number of other core health indicators (healthiest country according to Bloomberg and other respected sources). As such, we believe the Spanish case is one to study and to follow. The Spanish way of life means socialization, and while some believe denormalization is the answer and one-size-fits-all for all, in our case, it is clear we should keep on informing, sharing, and debating in a frank, empirical and scientific way!

5. What’s your favourite cocktail pick for the summer of 2024?

Uffff ... there is a favourite cocktail for each consumer and for conscious connoisseurs it also depends on the occasion.

I will certainly recommend a few because experiencing is the essence of believing & loving.

Gin-based as aperitivo, while bitters are not to be missed!

Brandy-based as sobremesa,

Sours for those (many) occasions you don’t know what to order or a Bloody Mary adding a touch of sherry.

As per summer time…classics are always appealing (palomas, daiquiris, margaritas and of course sangria infused with our great fruit liqueurs)

But… go and taste spicy and sweet, salty and bitter.. the only must-have ingredient is to select quality products!
